It just keeps getting better and better for the best colt in the field. As if easily winning every race he competes in, Big Brown drew the #1 post for Saturday’s 140th Belmont Stakes. What’s so good about the post at Belmont? The inside post position has produced more winners (23) than any other position on the track.
The Belmont Stakes is also called the ”Run for the Carnations” because of the white mass of carnations given to and then draped over the champions neck. The First Belmont Stakes took place at Jerome Park Racetrack in The Bronx in 1866. The track was financed by August Belmont, Sr. the man in which the race was named after. In 1890 the race moved to Morris Park Racecourse. In 1905 it moved to Belmont Park in Elmont, New York, where the race still takes place.
In 1926 a silver bowl, designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany (donated by the Belmont family), was given to the winning owner. This silver trophy bowl is still given to the champs.
Once again, the favorite will be Big Brown this Saturday. The colt that gets more and more famous every day has a chance to be the first Triple Crown winner in 30 years if he can take the Belmont Stakes this weekend. His post position is perfect, his strength is said to be 100%, and he is heavily favored. However, just because he’s supposed to win doesn’t mean the trophy, the winnings, and the historic championship is his. That will be decided on Saturday, and anything can happen.
1. Big Brown - Belmont odds 1 to 3: You have to love this horse going into Saturday’s race. For bettors, the odds will produce a better payout than those from the Preakness Stakes (he was 2 to 7). It’s hard to win all three, and this will be the longest race the mighty colt has completed, but you have to like his chances, especially because of the way he’s dominated the competition at every turn. It’s not great value, but you have to admit, there’s not a horse with a better chance to win.
2. Guadalcanal - Belmont odds 40 to 1: This is interesting because not only is Guadacanal a late entry, but he has never won a race in five chances. He has, however, finished a close second at the same length, and makes one of the few horses that has proven to be comfortable at this distance. He may be a long shot, the longest in the field, but every once in a while miracles happen.
3. Denis of Cork - Belmont Odds 10-1: Once again, Denis of Cork is a horse that hasn’t won any huge races, but he did rally from a tough start (found in 20th place) to crawl back into the 3rd position. If he hadn’t struggled so much out of the gate, or maybe with a little more room, he could have caused more damage. He’ll get another shot on Saturday.
