Lucky Lester Signs on the Dotted Line
***
A couple of years ago, in the fall of 2005, Week 8 of the NFL season, Peter heard a rumor that a new capper was breaking onto the scene. Friends spoke of his original commentary and absolutely free picks; so he checked it out. This second year guy had a record hovering around .500, but was picking every single game, every week. After looking at the pick write-ups, Peter saw Lester’s Locks (Top Picks) as one hell of a money making venture – so he took some cash aside, and made the plunge into Lucky’s predictions.
For the next 4 weeks, Childs read each write up; placing bets down on the picks that Lucky put high stock in. Sure enough, Lester was making Peter money in no time. By Week 12, Peter was way up. He went out on a limb and took every one of Lucky’s picks. On Tuesday, Peter and Lucky had gone 12-4. But this is where it gets good. Week 13 came around, and being Lucky Week 13 by Lucky Lester, Peter put a little cash down on Lucky Lester’s most convincing 13 free picks in an impossible parlay. What do you know, but Lucky Lester hit the nail on the head that week, and walked away with a perfect 16-0 record. As for Peter’s 13-game parlay – well, that hit it big too. Peter took home a chunk of change that would make Chuck Barkley proud.
To put it lightly, a loyal reader was made. Peter Childs didn’t swing for the fences with anymore grand parlays, but two times a week, he was there to read Lucky Lester’s Free Picks and Reviews.

“Well, why don’t we just get him?” One of Belmont’s editors suggested.
“Now there’s an idea!”
A two-year fan of Lester’s articles, free picks, and general sports banter, Peter couldn’t think of a better guy to take Belmont to the next level. But it wasn’t all easy breezy, as finding Lucky Lester was no less difficult than searching for Bobby Fischer.
When the position originally opened, Childs didn’t think about reeling in Lucky Lester to fill the position. He didn’t know if he was available, and with the football season fast approaching, there was a question if he had the time to be the voice of Belmont. But things have a way of working out.
The Hunt for Lucky Lester:
Just before Team Belmont came up with the great idea to ink Lucky Lester, Lucky skipped out on his Spring writing priorities to catch a 737 to Paris, France and travel around the Mediterranean.
To make matters even more interesting, word on the street had Lucky Lester considering an offer from a couple different top sports books – apparently Peter Childs wasn’t the only one to take make a buck or two on Lester’s free advice. This news prompted a meeting of the minds at Belmont. The first and only issue on the agenda; Get Lucky Lester to make Belmont his preferred destination.
Much discussion took place; plans were laid, ideas were dismissed, calls were made, and in the end Peter wasn’t about to see the perfect man for the job slip between the cracks. “When we get a hold of him, we’ll give him a writer’s license to say whatever he wants,” he explained. Then and there, in that smug little room, the plan to get Lucky on at Belmont took root.
When Lucky Lester stepped off the plane for his 3-hour layover in Chicago, who was there to greet him, but Peter and a couple guys from Belmont. A meeting of minds ensued. One guy wanted his company to take the next step while a young writer was ready to take a chance on a new opportunity to strut his knowledge. Sure, Lucky had some other offers, but right off the bat he could see that a relationship with Belmont could very well be the perfect fit.
In-between flights at O’Hare International, Peter Childs offered Lucky a nice crisp contract; and right then and there, Lucky Lester signed on the dotted line. And thus Lucky Lester is the new spokesman for Belmont.com.
