Week 9 NFL Power Rankings
Number in brackets indicates last weeks rank.
What is left to be said about this team? So much depends on what they do this week vs the Colts, that I'll wait till next week to make any further comments on what could be the best team in NFL history.
I was more impressed with the Colt win on the road last week vs the Panthers than I was with the Patriots win over the Redskins. The Colts got down early and then scored 31 unanswered points against a decent Panthers team on the road. That's impressive!
The Cowboys are coming off a bye and take on key divisional rivals in their next 3 games, @ Eagles, @ Giants and home vs the Redskins.
The Steelers are coming off a nice road win @ Cincinnati, but we still don't really know if this team is a legitimate contender. Their wins have come against the Browns, Bills, 49ers, Seahawks and Bengals.
The Giants enter their bye week with a 6-2 record and a 6 game winning streak. Their matchup with the Cowboys next week will go a long way in giving us the winner of the
NFC East.
The Chargers are getting better, but against some really bad teams. In their 4 wins, the record of their opponents is a combined 11-19. In fact, all 4 of their wins have come against teams with losing records, while their losses have come against teams with winning records. They play the Vikings this week, another team with a losing record, but then play 6 consecutive games against teams with winning records.
The legend of QB Brett Favre grows with that "First Down Touchdown" overtime thriller in Denver. The Packers are poised to win their first
NFC North title since 2004. The Packers finally found a running game last week in Denver, but that was against the worst run defense in the NFL.
The Jags take a big hit losing DT Marcus Stroud to a 4 game suspension for Steroids, but did help their cause picking up DT Grady Jackson off the waiver wire. The Jags are still very physical and their matchup against the finesse Saints will be interesting to watch.
The Seahawks are still the class of the
NFC West, which isn't saying much. With teams like the Rams and 49ers floundering this season, the Seahawks only have to compete with the Cardinals for the divisional title.
The Lions are 6-2 and coming off a nice road win over the Bears. The Lions are 1 game back of the Packers for 1st place in the NFC North. This team is improving defensively and leads the NFL in Interceptions. It will be very interesting to see how this team finishes the season.
The Ravens are 4-3 and coming off a bye week. Their next 3 games are against divisional foes and will go a long way in telling us whether this team is playoff quality.
The Titans have to be pleased with their record and improvement from last year, but their passing game is outright gross. They rank 29th in the NFL and last week QB Vince Young was 6-14 for 42 passing yards. YIKES!!
After starting the season 0-2, the Chiefs have won 4 of their last 5 games and are coming off a bye before starting their 2nd Half of the season.
The Redskins have regressed quite a bit since the start of the season. They've lost 2 of 3 and are not playing near the level of the Giants or Cowboys, who have separated themselves from the rest of the NFC.
The Bucs are reeling, losing their last 2 and 3 of their last 4 games. This team needs to right the ship against an average Cardinals team at home.
The Eagles Sunday Night Game against the Cowboys either makes or breaks their season. Its a must, must win game for the Eagles. Good news for the Eagles, their best player on defense S Brian Dawkins is practicing this week and should suit up in this game against the 'Boys.
The Saints are riding high with a 3 game win streak and only 1 game out of 1st place in the
NFC South. This team has an easy 2nd Half of the season, with 5 of their next 9 games being played at home and travel dates against the dregs of the NFL, the Texans, Falcons and Bears. Things are looking very good in New Orleans.
The Panthers played a perfect quarter against the Colts on Sunday, holding the ball for over 10 minutes and holding a touchdown lead, but the rest of the game was brutal and they gave up 31 unanswered points in a losing effort off a bye week. The Panthers are fortunate to be in the NFC South, where no team has separated themselves from the rest of the competition.
Does anyone remember all the Brady Quinn talk at the beginning of the season? QB Derek Anderson is 2nd in the NFL in touchdown passes and is leading this Browns attack that ranks 4th in scoring.
The Broncos loss last Monday Night pretty much ended their season. They are 3-4 and play their next 6 of 9 games on the road.
It will be interesting to see how this team comes out of their bye week. They are 3-4 and only 1 game out of first place in the NFC West. Their 2nd Half schedule includes games against the Falcons, Rams, Bengals and Browns.
The Bears are done and this week we finally figured out what's wrong with their defense, LB Brian Urlacher has been slowed by an Arthritic Back and has been in pain all season. He's been out of position all year and is not close to the playmaker or tackling machine of previous years.
This team is improving and they've won 2 in a row and 3 of their last 4 games. But this team has to figure out their QB situation as we still don't know if JP Losman can start in this league.
The Bengals season is done and there are lots of rumblings regarding HC Marvin Lewis. Players and fans alike are questioning not going for it on a key 4th down vs. the Steelers. Coaches like Bill Parcells and Bill Billicheck go for it in those situations, Marv choked.
The Vikings have the most exciting player on offense, yet they are soo boring to watch. This team is one QB and WR away from competing in the NFC because they are loaded everywhere else.
The Texans looked every bit like a first year expansion team vs the Chargers last week. They got down 35 to 3 in the 1st Half and gave up special teams touchdowns and defensive touchdowns. This team can't get out of its own way. And it gets worse for the fans in Houston, who will be subjected to watching the Texans/Raiders game and not the Pats/Colts game due to NFL TV policies.
The Raiders are 2-5 and need a win against the Texans this week because after that game, the Raiders start the Second Half of their season which includes games against the defending NFC Champ Bears, defending Super Bowl Champ Colts, and games at Kansas City, Green Bay and Minnesota. If the Raiders were struggling to begin their season, imagine how they'll finish against some very stiff competition.
The Falcons are favored this week for the first and likely the only time this season.
Their season only got worse Sunday with a humiliating loss at home to the Saints. This team and season is in complete disarray.
HC Mangini has finally made the move to start QB Kellen Clemens, but this move is coming 2 weeks too late. QB Chad Pennington has seen his last days as a starting QB in the NFL.
The Dolphins played hard in London and from all reports, a very successful PR trip for the NFL. It will be very interesting to see if this Dolphins team can improve in the 2nd Half of the season. Yes, they're awful. Yes, they'd be better off losing games and garnering the #1 pick in the NFL draft, but HC Cam Cameron needs to get this team winning games to give this organization hope for 2008. They have 2 games at home vs. the Bills and the Jets , all winnable games for this team.
This team was up 14 and looking for their first win of the season, only to get hit yet again with more injuries. RB Steven Jackson had to leave in the 2nd Quarter, QB Marc Bulger had to leave for some time in the 2nd Half because of a sprained thumb on his throwing hand, and they lost another starting offensive lineman. This team is completely banged up and not getting healthier.
